  4. slidesvr.exe is a self-installing program
  5. for the Slidesaver screen saver. It uses 
  6. one of the most advanced setup programs 
  7. available (WISE) for creating safe, customized 
  8. installations.
  9.  
  10. Installing new shareware is always a bit of a 
  11. gamble, because a bad installation can do a 
  12. fair number on your system. The usual causes 
  13. are from overwriting of existing controls and
  14. dynamic link libraries with out of date versions, 
  15. or having the wrong versions of the same .vbx, .dll,
  16. and/or .drv file accessed by the executing program,
  17. if you have multiple versions of these files
  18. scattered across your drive.
  19. Important system files may also be rewritten in
  20. such a way that existing programs may no longer
  21. work properly.

  23. The slidesvr.zip file contains the slidesvr.exe self
  24. installing program for Slidesaver, as well as install.txt
  25. (this file) and a file_id.diz file for easy identification
  26. of this program from within a zip file.
  27.  
  28. The slidesvr.exe file installs an uninstall program
  29. for Slidesaver as well as the program files needed
  30. for execution. Files which are installed are:

  32. slidesvr.scr  (MUST go in your WINDOWS directory)
  33. slidesvr.hlp  (MUST go in the same dir as slidesvr.scr)
  34.  
  35. The following files SHOULD go in your WINDOWS\SYSTEM
  36. directory:
  37. gifbox.vbx    (required to show GIF images)
  38. vbrun300.dll  (visual basic 3 run time module)
  39. cmdialog.vbx  (visual basic control - common dialog)
  40. commdlg.dll   (dynamic link library for common dialogs)
  41. aspin.vbx     (visual basic control - spin buttons)
  42. threed.vbx    (visual basic control - 3D panels)

  44. When the program is run the first time, features you
  45. establish in the setup dialog box (GIF directory, delay,
  46. password) are stored in the CONTROL.INI file in your
  47. WINDOWS directory.

  49. If you already have some of these files installed, 
  50. you will be asked if you wish to overwrite with the
  51. files from the install set. ONLY replace files if 
  52. they are older versions of the ones being installed.
  53. Please note that most of these files MUST be placed
  54. in either C:\WINDOWS or in a directory accessed via
  55. the PATH statement in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. If
  56. you install files to a different directory you may
  57. get unpredictable results. This is because if there
  58. are two different versions of the same .vbx file on
  59. your hard drive, you may end up using the wrong 
  60. version with Slidesaver. Since in this installation
  61. the slidesvr.scr file is required in the C:\WINDOWS
  62. directory (or whatever directory you have WINDOWS 
  63. installed in), the underlying DOS operating system
  64. will automatically use the .vbx files which are in
  65. the same directory the executable file (slidescr.scr)
  66. is in, and if these are not present, your PATH 
  67. statement determines the order in which DOS searches
  68. for the .vbx files required by Slidesaver. This 
  69. discussion also covers .dll (dynamic link libraries)
  70. and .drv (driver) files as well.
